Online! Particularly on Twitter, where you get people who are nowhere near their real names. The ease with which you get a line of criticism of you about your job, or something that you’ve written – which is entirely fair enough, you know, every journalist should be prepared to be criticised and, even if it stings, listen to it and respond to it if you want to. But what shocks me is the speed with which it turns into ‘You’re a slut’. The sexualised nature of it just absolutely stuns me sometimes, and I think that what you see online is often people trying to injure or damage someone that they are frustrated with or are criticising. And the fact that when people are trying to damage or catch the attention of or hurt a female person, the speed with which they repair to some sort of sexualised threat or shaming is just stunning. It really is.
